The eighth annual NEARfest at Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA, was held on the weekend of June 24–25, 2006. Gentle Giant fans will note that it was the second visit to Bethlehem for guitarist Gary Green.

Roger Dean again attended and provided the festival logo for this “OctoNEARfest,” creating a long-lost sibling of the creature featured prominently on Roger’s cover for Giant’s “Octopus” album. The second artist-in-residence (sharing an exhibition room with Dean) was Mark Wilkinson of Marillion fame.

Friday night’s “Progressive Legends Showcase II” kicked off the festival in fine form with a solid double-bill featuring the Tony Levin Band opening up for Hatfield and the North, who were making their first-ever U.S. appearance.
